
Getting Your Wafer Temps Right in the Smart Fab
If you’re building a smart Fab, you’ve probably realized that waiting for something to break before you fix it is a nightmare. You need to see what’s happening right now. That’s where infrared (IR) systems come in. We use them because they let us map the heat across a wafer without ever actually touching the thing. No contact, no contamination. Simple.
Why Non-Contact Actually Matters
Think about the old way—thermocouples. They have to touch the surface, which is just asking for trouble. You’re risking mechanical stress or, even worse, dropping a particle right onto your substrate. With IR pyrometry, we just “watch” the thermal radiation coming off the wafer. It’s cleaner. These sensors spit out signals that plug straight into your PLC or SCADA system. Suddenly, you’ve got a live heat map. It’s the only real way to catch those annoying “cold spots” when you’re running rapid thermal processing.
Making the Data Actually Useful
A sensor by itself is just a piece of hardware. The real magic is how you hook it up to your data layer. We build these IR systems to be tough. We know that etch or CVD tools are noisy environments—all that electromagnetic interference from RF generators can mess with your signals. But once we get that thermal energy turned into digital data, you can set up a feedback loop that actually works. If the temperature drifts by even 2°C? The system catches it and tweaks the power supply instantly. You don’t even have to blink.
The Reality Check
Now, it’s not all perfect. There are some trade-offs. IR sensors are picky about emissivity. If you change your wafer coating or if the gas in the chamber starts swirling around, your readings will drift. You’ll need to spend some time calibrating the software settings, or you’ll end up chasing ghost data. And one more thing: keep your windows clean. If gunk builds up on the quartz port, the signal gets blocked. Your thermal profile goes sideways, and you’re back to square one. Keep the glass clear, and you’re golden.
