When you’re surrounded by flammable solvents and explosive vapors, a basic infrared lamp isn’t just a tool—it’s a risk. The Sneaky Problem with Ozone
Most short-wave lamps kick out ozone (O3) because of the UV light they emit. In a clean room, that might not matter. But in a chemical environment? Ozone loves to react with organic solvents. It eats through your seals and can even trigger reactions you really don’t want. To fix this, we use a special type of quartz tubing. It filters out those vacuum-UV wavelengths before they ever leave the lamp. No UV, no ozone. Simple as that.
Keeping the Sparks Out
If you’re working in a “Zone” rated area, you can’t just leave a glass tube exposed. It’s too dangerous. We wrap the whole assembly in a protective sleeve. Think of it as a shield. It keeps those volatile vapors from touching the hot quartz surface and stops corrosive splashes from ruining your gear. But the sleeve is only half the battle. The real danger is usually at the connection points. If your wiring is loose, you’ve got a leak. We make sure every electrical connection is completely isolated from the atmosphere. No leaks, no sparks, no explosions.
The Reality Check
Now, here’s the trade-off. Putting a shield around your heat source means some of that energy gets blocked. You’ll notice a slight dip in efficiency compared to a bare bulb. It’s not a big deal, but you have to account for it. You might need to bump up the wattage or move the lamp a bit closer to your workpiece to hit your target temperature. One more thing: when these lamps are cranking at full power, the enclosure gets hot.Really hot. Make sure your mounting brackets are tough enough to handle the heat without warping. And please, do yourself a favor and check your gaskets every 500 hours. If a seal fails, your “explosion-proof” lamp is just a fancy piece of glass. Keep them tight, and you’ll be fine.
