In a high-volume semiconductor fab, a lamp bursting isn’t just a “maintenance issue.” It’s a nightmare. Think about it: a quartz tube snaps, and suddenly you’ve got glass shards and tungsten filaments raining down directly onto your wafers. One bad break and your entire batch is trash. That’s why we build our infrared heating systems to catch the mess before it ever touches your product. Why lamps fail in the first place High-wattage lamps are under a lot of pressure. They’re constantly heating up and cooling down, which puts a massive amount of stress on the material. If there’s even a tiny, microscopic flaw in the quartz—or if the heat isn’t spread evenly—the tube cracks. In a basic setup, that’s when things shatter. We handle this by using high-purity fused quartz. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out the exact wall thickness that lets heat through while staying tough. We don’t just crank up the wattage and hope for the best; we spec every tube to handle the actual thermal cycles your process puts it through. Keeping the debris out To keep the wafers clean, we use a simple, physical “catch-all” strategy. We house the lamps in a dedicated safety sleeve. It’s a precision-engineered guard that acts as a shield. If the inner lamp burns out or bursts, the sleeve traps the fragments. You’ll still have to replace a broken lamp, sure, but your wafers stay spotless. We also obsess over the connection points. If a connector isn’t seated perfectly, you get arcing. That creates hot spots, and hot spots lead to premature failure. We use tight-tolerance fittings to make sure the electrical contact is rock solid. The trade-off Here’s the honest part: adding a protective sleeve does block a little bit of the infrared transmission. You lose a small percentage of that direct heat. You might need to tweak your power settings or add a bit of dwell time to make up for it. But honestly? That’s a tiny price to pay compared to the horror of scrapping a whole batch of wafers because of a few pieces of glass.
