
Why we put our IP65 heaters through the “damp-heat” ringer
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick steam, the sudden temperature jumps, and the occasional splash of water, it’s basically a torture chamber for a heater. Now, we build our infrared heaters to an IP65 standard, which sounds great on a spec sheet. But a rating is just a snapshot in time. It doesn’t tell you if the heater will still be working six months after it’s bolted to your ceiling. Here’s the thing about moisture. An IP65 rating means the unit can handle dust and low-pressure water jets. That’s fine for a splash, but steam is a different beast. Vapor is tiny. It sneaks through gaps that liquid water can’t even touch. Once that steam gets inside, it settles on the circuitry and elements, slowly eating away at them. If those seals give up, you’re looking at a short circuit or a tripped breaker. Not exactly the vibe you want while you’re trying to dry off after a shower. To stop that from happening, we use damp-heat aging tests. We basically bake the heaters in high-humidity chambers for hundreds of hours. We’re looking for the bad stuff—shrinking seals or rusty contact points—before the product ever reaches your home. Then there’s the heat itself. Infrared lamps get incredibly hot, while the outer casing stays relatively cool. That tug-of-war between hot and cold puts a ton of stress on the gaskets and glue. If we didn’t stress-test this, the “waterproof” part of the heater could vanish the second it actually warms up. We keep a close eye on the plastic housings to make sure they don’t warp or “creep” under the pressure. But we have to be careful. If we make the seals too tight, we trap all that heat inside the housing. If the electronics can’t breathe, they’ll fry themselves. It’s a balancing act. We have to find that sweet spot where water stays out, but the internal drivers stay cool enough to keep running. We don’t like guessing. We just test everything until it breaks. That’s the only way to make sure your heater actually lasts.
