
Making Bathroom Heaters Actually Comfortable
Let’s be honest: nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. To fix that, we use short-wave infrared (SWIR) lamps. They’re great because they give you that “instant” warmth the second you flip the switch. But there’s a catch. Standard quartz tubes are blinding. If you’ve ever looked at one, you know it’s like staring into a miniature sun. That’s a problem, especially if you’ve got kids or infants in the bath who have much more sensitive eyes.
Dealing with the Glare
We wanted the heat, but not the blinding light. So, we messed with the emission spectrum. Instead of just using a plain tube that dumps a ton of visible light into the room, we use special coatings and filtered glass. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. It blocks the harsh, high-frequency light but lets the warmth glide right through. You still feel that cozy heat on your skin, but the light stays soft and mellow. Now, there’s a tiny trade-off here. Filtering the light means you lose a sliver of thermal efficiency. You’re giving up a tiny bit of raw heat to make sure you aren’t blinding yourself every time you wash your hands. To us, that’s a fair deal.
Water, Steam, and Stress
Putting high-voltage electronics in a room full of steam is… risky. To keep things safe, we wrap these lamps in IP-rated housing. We also use high-temp seals at the ends of the lamps. This keeps the moisture from creeping into the sockets and causing a short. Then there’s the “thermal shock” factor. When you turn these on, the filament hits its peak temperature in a heartbeat. If we used cheap glass, it would just shatter. We use fused quartz because it’s tough. Even if a stray drop of water hits the hot surface, the tube holds up.
A Quick Tip on Wiring
If you’re installing these, keep an eye on your power. These lamps pull a lot of current right at the start. If your wiring is too thin, you’ll get voltage drops. That doesn’t just make the heater less effective—it actually kills the lamp faster. If you’re putting in a big array of lamps, just run them on their own dedicated circuit. It’s a lot better than spending your winter morning resetting a tripped breaker.
