
Stop the Shards: Keeping Your Wafers Safe from Lamp Failures
Let’s be honest. A burst infrared lamp in a fab isn’t just a “maintenance headache.” It’s a nightmare. When a quartz tube gives out under a heavy load, you aren’t just losing a bulb. You’re dealing with glass shards and tungsten filaments raining down right onto your wafers. That’s how you lose a whole batch in seconds. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that from happening during the drying stage. Why do these things actually break? Usually, it comes down to thermal shock or the electrodes just wearing out. In a high-load setup, those lamps are cycling on and off constantly. The quartz expands, then contracts, then expands again. If the glass wall isn’t perfectly even, the stress builds up in one spot until—pop. To fix this, we use high-purity synthetic quartz with a very tight tolerance on the wall thickness. It spreads the heat more evenly, which means the tube doesn’t feel the need to shatter. Adding a safety net We don’t just rely on the glass being strong. We add a second layer of insurance. We wrap the lamps in a special sleeve that lets the IR light through but keeps the debris in. Think of it like a safety windshield. If the inner lamp fails, the sleeve catches the fragments before they ever touch your process chamber. Then there are the seals. We use ceramic-to-metal seals at the ends of the tube. They’re tough. Even if the internal gas pressure spikes, the lamp stays contained instead of exploding outward. The trade-offs (because nothing is free) Here’s the catch. Adding sleeves and beefier seals means the whole assembly is a bit larger. You’ll want to double-check your tool’s clearances before you swap these in to make sure everything still fits. Also, that protective sleeve does soak up a little bit of the IR transmission—usually around 3% to 5%. It’s not a dealbreaker, but you might need to nudge your power settings up a tiny bit to keep your drying speeds where they need to be. We build these for the 24/7 grind of a real fab.
